Manton Reece - More movement away from Facebook

I remain tied to having a Facebook account. I’ve all but stopped posting on their services, but keep an account active due to event invites.

That said, it should be pointed out so much of what Facebook is used for can be replaced easily. Thoughts and photos can be shared on a personal blog. Suggestions of services would be Blot or Micro.blog, both of which believe in open web standards (Facebook is considered closed web, for reference). Photos can also be shared between friends via services built into your mobile OS of choice.

Events invites can be sent by a simple text message, or through a calendar invite in your calendar app of choice. Calendar apps can automate emails or text messages to send RSVPs out, so consider trying that when you need something structured.

The point of all of this is we don’t need Facebook as much as we think we do. It’s just a matter of deciding it’s time to pull the plug.
